SUMMARY: In one of the station's old ore processing units, O'Brien and Jake are deleting files from the Cardassian computer system as part of a project to convert the facility into a deuterium refinery. Commander Sisko stops by to see how things are going. Unfortunately, removing one of the files triggers a security program, which locks down the area and transmits a warning to Ops that a "worker revolt" has begun. A recording of Dukat appears on the screen, declaring "Bajoran workers, your attention please", and giving a warning to end their revolt.
Efforts begin to retrieve the trapped crew, which fail as nobody has an acceptable Cardassian security code. While Odo is working in the security office, Quark joins him, saying that this is the safest part of the station. Meanwhile in the refinery, Sisko buys time by telling the computer he is the leader of the revolt and that they surrender. As they do not have any Cardassian codes with which to enter an "all clear", the program then decides that they have not actually surrendered and tries to kill the "Bajoran workers" by flooding the area with deadly neurocine gas. Meanwhile, Jake has climbed through the empty ore chute and opened a compartment, enabling all three humans to escape. However, the security system detects this and initiates a counter-insurgency program which locks down Ops and the security office, and preventing communication.
O'Brien and the Siskos try to break out of the ore storage room by using the cart to break open the door, without success. They give up and attempt to use some raw uridium to blow it up using electricity. Meanwhile in Ops, Dax's hands were burned by a force field while attempting to regain control of the main computer. This escalates the counter-insurgency program, which announces it will pump neurocine gas into the station's habitat ring, killing everyone inside. Garak then arrives, whose Cardassian security codes were old but still valid. Unfortunately, his access is too low to allow anything but him personally to traverse the station. They delay the dispersal of the neurocine by destroying the station's life support system, hoping to fix the issue before they run out of oxygen. However the program escalates and announces the station will self-destruct in two hours.
Since now Dukat (the former commander of DS9) is the only person who can shut down the program, Garak begins working to impersonate Dukat's security codes, but are unsuccessful. This causes the program to escalate and materializes a stationary disruptor in the Ops food replicator which begins firing at the crew. Shortly after, Dukat himself beam into Ops and explains his ship received a distress call, so he came to investigate. He treats the crew casually despite the life-threatening situation, even ordering tea. He then laughs at Garak hiding, and the two begin exchanging insults. Dukat then shuts down the disruptor and invites Kira into the commander's office, offering to shut down the security program in exchange for keeping a permanent Cardassian garrison on the station. Naturally, Kira refuses. With thirty minutes left on the countdown, Dukat says he will give them time to think about it, and prepares to transport back. However, the security program detects this, and a recording from his former commanding officer appears saying that his access codes have been rescinded and the countdown made unstoppable as punishment for "cowardice" in attempting to flee the station during a rebellion.
True to the recording, Dukat is unable to deactivate the self-destruct sequence. Garak laughs, and the two begin arguing again. Dukat then explains that the self-destruct functions by causing the main reactor's stabilizers to be taken offline, causing a massive overload that would destroy the station. He theorizes that the reactor's fusion initiator could be manually disabled, but this would require them to be in the reactor room. The Ops crew eventually manages to disable all the station's force fields and restore communications. Meanwhile, O'Brien and the Siskos have escaped from the ore area, and the three of them head for the reactor room after instruction from Ops.
Odo and Quark, still trapped in the security office, hear from Kira about this news. However, the force field around the office is still in place, suggesting it was put into place separately. Quark insults Odo, blaming him for being honorable, which he says is getting them both killed. Sisko and O'Brien discover the main corridor to the reactor room isblocked, and attempt to crawl through a conduit, which is experiencing a plasma fire. O'Brien collapses and is rescued by Jake, and Sisko makes it all the way. He is not able to disable the reactor, but instead redirects the power into the station's deflector shields. The self-destruct has been succesfully aborted.
After Odo's office has been fixed, he and Quark walk down the Promenade, the latter having just realized that Odo had previously lied to Quark saying he thought he was devious, as a compliment before they both died. As they walk off into the distance, Odo lists Ferengi he actually considers more devious than Quark.

Garak then arrives, who has only low-level codes which only permit him to move about, not fix the situation. He then attempts to impersonate Dukat's access code, which immediately fails. The program is escalated and a disruptor appears in the food replicator, firing indiscriminately. While the crew shelters, the program announces the self-destruct mechanism has been armed.
The Siskos and O'Brien have arrived in an ore storage room. Since they cannot use a cart to ram open the door, they hatch a plan to use the raw uridium ore to explode it. We then return to Ops, where Dukat has just beamed in. He immediately offers to end the self-destruct sequence in exchange for being allowed to place a garrison; Kira refuses. He then tries to beam back before the self-destruct finishes, to "give them time to think", but a recording of his former commanding officer appears on the computer and announces that his security codes have been revoked for his cowardice.
We see Odo and Quark in the security office, where they are trapped. Quark blames Odo for being too honorable and the two begin to characteristically bicker. The scene then shifts to Ops: since shutting down the self-destruct is not impossible, the crew (and Dukat) devise a means to shut down all the station's force fields, which also restores communications. They instruct Sisko and O'Brien, who have just escaped the ore room, to hurry and disable the reactor. The group arrives and is able to do so, saving the day. The cast cheers at their success.
NOTABLE DIFFERENCES: The security program escalates much more rapidly, such as the neurocine in the ore processing unit beginning immediately and combining the disruptor and station self-destruct steps. Jadzia Dax and Julian Bashir appear as expected but have no major lines. In general, characters spend less time moving around or having discussions not directly relevant to the plot. The ending scene with Odo and Quark walking along the Promenade has been cut.

The security program escalates, announcing the station will self-destruct in half an hour.
Dukat beams into Ops, announcing that he learned of the station's predicament and offers to disable the program in exchange for establishing a garrison; Kira refuses. Dukat's transport triggers the security program to disable his security codes, causing Garak and Dukat to argue before being interrupted by Kira, who has figured out a way to restore communications. The crew talks with O'Brien and Jake, and tell them to go to the reactor and disenage the fusion initator. They arrive and successfully disarm the self-destruct mechanism.
NOTABLE DIFFERENCES: Commander Sisko is entirely absent, with only a brief mention that he is "away on Bajor". The show's opening and credit sequences, as well as all scenes with Odo and Quark have been cut. The security program is further reduced, with the automatic disruptor and force fields not being activated. Significant amounts of dialogue has been cut, with Dukat's recording and his arguing with Garak making up the bulk of plot-irrelevant dialogue.

SUMMARY: O'Brien is working in an ore processing unit when he trips a security program. A brief recording of Dukat appears, threatening them if they do not surrender to Cardassian security. O'Brien manages to override the door with an engineering tool and escape.
In Ops, Garak and Kira are talking when the computer announces that a worker revolt is in progress, and then the counter-insurgency program activates. When Garak attempts to disable the security program, it announces that Ops has been compromised and begins the self-destruct sequence.
A short fade-out reveals that time has passed, but with no progress to show for it. Dukat then beams in, announcing he can solve their dilemma in exchange for something, but Kira cuts him off, saying she isn't interested. Garak and Dukat begin to argue, only being interrupted when O'Brien tells them on a voice channel that he has disabled the reactor, saving the day.
NOTABLE DIFFERENCES: Jake Sisko is absent, and while Kira is present she has only one line. The only two rooms shown on screen are the ore processing unit and Ops. Nearly half the run time is filled by Garak and Dukat arguing.
