Riley and a Stuffed Bear

Riley stood in the middle of the room, holding the bear out in front of her with one hand, and making its little legs dance about with the other. As it danced, she hummed a tune she heard on a radio that morning, while she had been nabbing a snack from the kitchen. She didn’t remember the words, but its notes went up and down, like many of the nursery rhymes she remembered from a long long time ago, before she got older. It made her smile, though she didn’t know why.

Riley had tried to steal him again, take him back home with her, but she was never able to leave without one of the silent men taking him away, and putting him back in the quiet room. She hated the quiet room, it was too small, and hard to breathe, and when she was inside it was very dark and very lonely. Luckily, whenever she was in the quiet room, her bear was there too, and when he was there, she could make him a fierce superhero, or a famous singer, and he would help her go to sleep.

”I can’t sleep, Mommy.

”Shh, it’s alright sweety. Everything is alright. Want me to tell you that story again?”

”Okay.”

”Through the mouth of the cave, and past the dark tunnel in the entrance, a bright light is visible below, though it’s unclear how far ahead. After an unending expanse without any indication of direction or distance, the passage opens up into a shining cavern, lit by sparkling stones on the damp ceiling far above. Pink and orange crystals, pure and sharp, tear the air apart with their vibrant hues, creating patterns of golden light that tell abstract stories on the blue stone walls. From high above the hole, droplets of fresh spring water flow through roots and channels in the soil, until at last, they find their way into the glistening cave below, and fall with a deafening silence through the crisp, clean air, before meeting their eventual conclusion in a cold pond at the edge of the stalagmites. Inexplicably, a gentle breeze manages to waft through, dodging the rock formations that litter the chasm walls and stretches hundreds of meters up, churning up small whirlwinds of dust and broken geodes in a swirling array of pastelles. Jutting out at every angle, a chorus of minerals in brilliant parallax glow, illuminating a marble dais surrounded by carvings in the agate floor, as if to leave some unspoken message of beauty; a perfect memory, held captive deep below the surface, and protected from change until the end of time.”

Riley was woken up abruptly by two men building something in the corner of the quiet room, but to her dismay, they were silent men as well. Weeping softly, longing for the gentle touch of her mother’s hand against her hair, Riley drifted back to sleep.

Riley had gotten lost trying to find food, and when she returned to the quiet room, it was locked. She pounded hard against the door, sobbing for her bear, but no one came to help. Sniffling, Riley took it upon herself to locate a key, so she could rescue her poor bear once more. So, she started walking, and didn't stop for hours. She didn't know where she was or where she was going, but she checked every door to find some way inside the quiet room. Eventually, she found an unlocked door, and stepped inside. It was cold. Too cold, and very dark, so Riley made the executive decision to leave. Now, she was lost once more, and so she stood a while, and thought.

Riley sat, huddled in a broom closet, cradling a towel for warmth. She hadn't seen her bear in a very long time, and she was scared. But as she sat, she looked up the dim orange glow of the light bulb, flickering on and off, and shining bleakly on the light yellow bristles of a worn out broom. Riley grabbed the bottom of the broom and held it close. It reminded her of her mother's hair, long and blond and beautiful.

"Mommy, where's my bear?"

"I just put him in the wash, sweety, he'll be out and drying in no time."

"I was looking for him and I felt so alone and scared."

"If you ever feel lonely, remember this: You'll have friends and family who stick with you for your whole life, but they aren't always there for you, and it can be tough. But you've always got yourself, and if you be the strongest you can be, you can take on the world."

Riley got up, and put the towel back on the shelf she took it from. Opening the door of the closet, she chose a direction and started running, determined now more than ever. She would find the quiet room, she would open the door, and she would save her bear.
