Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: An instance of SCP-XXXX is to be stored as a digital text document on a secure server, the casing of which is to be cleared of biological matter on a daily basis. Internal components are to be cleansed with isopropyl alcohol as required.

Reading from SCP-XXXX chapter 4 or beyond is prohibited.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a short, anonymously authored, untitled and possibly unfinished work of horror fiction which exhibits marked anomalous qualities. The opening chapters establish the protagonist as a young zoological researcher observing a novel species of lepidoptera through its morphological cycle. The content of later chapters is unknown, however attempts to progress a D-Class reading group through the story indicate the presence of body-horror genre conventions within the narrative.

Any paper manuscript of SCP-XXXX will, if left unobstructed for a short period of time, begin to anomalously contort into the form of a small chrysalis structure. When dissected within eight minutes of formation these structures are found to be empty. [Further study pending approval.]

If SCP-XXXX is iterated as a digital document, the casing of any powered hardware containing the file will anomalously accumulate biological matter consistent with that of failed lepidopteran pupation1. Internal components will initially undergo minor torsional stresses, with forces generally insufficient to cause damage to hardware or sever well-soldered connections.

Any analogue audio cassette tape containing an SCP-XXXX iteration, produced with text-to-speech software, will exhibit equivalent effects; the tape will gradually unspool and knot in twists, snapping as its propensity to form a chrysalis structure is arrested by the limitations of the medium. Following this stage, deceased pupae matter will continuously generate and begin to extrude through gaps2 in the plastic casing as pressure builds internally.

“My soul would sing of metamorphoses.
But since, o gods, you were the source of these
bodies becoming other bodies, breathe
your breath into my book of changes:”
